At the Permaculture Institute of the Northern Cape (PINC), we believe that the most powerful changes often begin with the smallest actions. As July comes to an end and the Northern Cape’s winter quietly lingers, we’re reminded that this season is the perfect time to pause, observe, and begin – no matter how small the step.

Start Where You Are
Many people think they need a large farm or fancy tools to “do permaculture.” But the truth is: permaculture is a mindset, not a shopping list. You can begin today, in your kitchen, your backyard, or even on a balcony. It’s about becoming more aware of natural systems and working with them.

Here are a few meaningful steps anyone can take right now:

  1. Start a compost jar or pile
Even in winter, your kitchen scraps hold value. Collect vegetable peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, and crushed cardboard. Layer them in a bucket or open compost pile. This waste will become rich soil in the spring.

Tip: Avoid meat, dairy and oils for now – keep it simple and plant-based.

  1. Observe your sunlight patterns
Take 5 minutes a day to notice where the sun shines on your space – especially as days begin to lengthen. Knowing where and when sunlight hits your garden or window helps plan future planting.

Tip: Mark sunny spots with rocks or small flags to track consistency.

  1. Reuse water where possible
Greywater from rinsing vegetables or washing hands (with natural soap) can be reused to water plants.
  2. Grow something small indoors
Herbs like basil, parsley or coriander can grow in a sunny windowsill. It’s not about how much you grow, but about learning how plants respond to light, water and care.

Tip: Reuse old yoghurt tubs or tin cans with drainage holes for pots.

  1. Read, reflect, and dream
Winter is a great time to deepen your knowledge. Read a permaculture book, watch a documentary, or sketch out your dream garden. Learning and planning are just as valuable as digging and planting.

At PINC, we know that meaningful change doesn’t require waiting for spring. It begins now, with awareness, intention, and action – even in the quiet months.

Let August be the month you stop waiting. Start small!
